Frequently Asked Questions.
Why
are trees beneficial? Trees provide a variety of benefits besides environmental, such as social, community, and economic. Trees provide an array of benefits, including:
What is the difference between an arborist and a certified arborist? Arborists are trained professionals that are knowledgeable and equipped to provide proper tree care. They are specially trained to provide a variety to services to maintain trees. ISA Certified Arborists are individuals who have achieved a level of knowledge in the art and science of tree care through at least three years of experience and have passed a comprehensive examination. They are also required to continue their education in order to maintain their certification, ensuring their knowledge is updated on the latest arboriculture techniques. ISA Arborist Certification is a non-governmental voluntary process that operates without mandate of law. It is an internal self-regulating device administered by the International Society of Arboriculture, and therefore, cannot guarantee or assure the quality of performance. Certification provides a measurable assessment of an individual’s knowledge and competence required to provide proper tree care.
What is Crown Raising Crown raising is simply removing branches from the bottom of the crown of a tree to provide clearance for pedestrians, vehicles, buildings or lines of site. For street trees the minimum clearance is often specified by municipal ordinance.
How should I plant my tree? Location conditions are extremely important and vital to a tree’s health. Be sure to examine the tree location conditions and follow these steps when planting your new tree:
What is pruning a tree? Pruning is the cutting or removing branches or parts of trees or for improving the shape or growth of trees. This is the most common tree maintenance procedure. Usually, trees are pruned preventative or as a corrective measure to remove dead branches, crowded or rubbing limbs, eliminate hazards, and increase light and air penetration. Since each cut to a tree has the potential to change the growth, it is important to educate yourself, considering no branch should be removed without any reason.
Oak trees should never be pruned during late March, April, May and early June.
Most trees only need a thorough pruning every 3-5 years. However, the trees may need a small touch up pruning every 1-2 years depending on the tree's condition and your personal expectations. We very commonly run into over-pruned trees. It is important to understand that more pruning does not equal healthier trees. Tree pruning and tree care should be done on a prescription basis. You should be objective and identify a need to prune.
What is topping a tree? Topping is the indiscriminate cutting of tree branches to stubs or lateral branches that are not large enough to assume the terminal role. Other names for topping including “heading,” “tipping,” “hat-racking,” and “rounding over.”
Topping is perhaps
the most harmful tree pruning practice known. It is usually done to
reduce the size of a tree. Often, homeowners top their trees because
they feel that they have become too large for their property and are a
hazard. However, topping will make a tree more hazardous in the long
term and is very harmful to the health of a tree.
What should I do if I think my tree has insect and/or disease problems? As soon as you notice any abnormality in your tree’s appearance, you should begin a careful examination of the problem. Insects and diseases can threaten a tree’s health. By identifying the specific symptoms of damage and understanding the causes, you may be able to diagnose the problem and take appropriate actions for treatment. You should contact a tree care professional for assistance immediately. More on Diseases
How do I know if I have Oak Wilt? The best way to diagnose Oak Wilt is by identifying a pattern of spread. But be careful! Oak Wilt is the most difficult tree disease to diagnose. The typical foliar symptom associated with Oak Wilt can be caused by many different ailments, many of which are not diseases at all. And a pattern of spread can be masked by prior treatments and trenches aimed at controlling the disease. Because the disease is so difficult to diagnose and causes so much damage we highly recommend you get the help of a professional if you think you have oak wilt. More on Oak Wilt Treatment
What is Stem Failure
Trees do not heal wounds
and can only grow over old wounds to seal them off. A tree carries every
injury its ever had and the sites of these injuries
are structurally weaker than normal solid wood. These weak areas can
quickly fail under storm conditions leading to stem damage and breakage.
You need to know that there
are two types of tree roots: fine, absorbing roots and woody, structural
roots. Both types are important in anchoring a tree. If these roots are
constrained, diseased or damaged a tree can lean or fall.
A branch is attached to a
tree by a small layer of stem wood called the branch collar. Branches
are designed to come off at times and a healthy tree will seal off that
spot over time. Ice storms or downbursts that occur only rarely will
leave the branches unprepared and susceptible to tearing downward along
the stem or snapping.
Are you licensed and insured? There is no “licensing” for tree service in Austin. But, we are insured and we have a certified arborist on staff.
